Product Description
“Within a boundary of roughly a half-mile radius, centered at my house, was where my buddies and I played, hung out, played pranks, and grew up together. Life was simple back then. Without the distractions from cell phones, internet access, and all the trapping of the digital age, none of us had much loose change jingling in our pockets. We relied on our imagination, resourcefulness, and carefree attitude for play and adventure. During those long and languid afternoons, boredom often seeped in. When the steady cadence of insects from the forest and the croaking of frogs basking on the muddy riverbanks teased our ears, we’d round up the usual gang to plot our adventures and mischief. Our lives were much like the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.”
Under the Malaccan Sun is a memoir of C.P. Bok. This memoir started as a series of vignettes that Bok wrote of his childhood in Malacca (now Melaka), Malaysia, following the heartbreaking experience of his mother’s death. Bok left Malacca for the USA as a teenager. Since his fondest memories of his mother were from his childhood, he wrote as a therapy to soothe the pain of loss and sorrow. This book tells of Bok's childhood during the 1960s and 70s and beautifully captures the remarkable people, places, and events in Malacca that characterized a unique way of life from a bygone era. This book will help readers to unleash memories from their unique and exciting childhood and fill them with nostalgia, as it did for Bok.
