马来西亚是一个盛产锡矿的国家，十八世纪到二十世纪初，众多的中国闽粤两省人民，为经济利益前来马来亚种植及开采锡矿，华人移居马来西亚后，便陆续建立起地缘会馆，为初来的乡亲，提供生活上的帮助。与此同时，地缘会馆也持续传承着原乡的民俗文化活动，包括传统节庆与宗教信仰，为乡民提供精神寄托，较大程度的保留了原乡地域文化特色。
最早进入吉隆坡开采锡矿，并参与城市建设的两大华人族群，即来自中国广东省的广府人与客家人。从最早成立广府籍的广肇会馆以及最早成立客家籍的惠州会馆，可了解这两个族群离开了祖籍地，在吉隆坡所传承的广府与客家民俗文化有哪些，如今发展如何，呈现出怎样的风貌。从广肇会馆创建的关帝庙，以及惠州人叶亚来创建的仙四师爷庙，其中所供奉的神祇，可以探知这两族群的宗教信仰内容，包括会馆仍然坚持的传统祭祀礼仪。
